When a Nakshatra Spans Two Signs
Nine lunar mansions begin in one rashi and finish in the next. Sign lord and mansion lord then part company — a common source of mixed readings.

Krittika begins at 26°40′ of Aries and continues to 10° of Taurus. Same mansion. Two rashis. Two sign lords. One nakshatra lord — the Sun.
Nine of the twenty-seven equal spans of 13°20′ sit across a sign boundary. The other eighteen live inside a single rashi. That split is ordinary arithmetic on a sidereal belt of twelve 30° signs. It is also one of the most useful facts in nakshatra work, because it forces a planet to have two hosts at once: the owner of the sign it currently occupies, and the owner of the mansion that continues on the other side of the line.
What a Nakshatra Adds to a Chart treated the mansion as a finer grain than the sign. Nakshatra Lord and Sign Lord compared the two hosts. This page is the special case in which the mansion itself refuses to stay inside one sign.
The nine spanning mansions
In the usual equal-span list, these nine cross a rashi line:
- Krittika — late Aries into early Taurus (Sun)
- Mrigashira — late Taurus into early Gemini (Mars)
- Punarvasu — late Gemini into early Cancer (Jupiter)
- Uttara Phalguni — late Leo into early Virgo (Sun)
- Chitra — late Virgo into early Libra (Mars)
- Vishakha — late Libra into early Scorpio (Jupiter)
- Uttara Ashadha — late Sagittarius into early Capricorn (Sun)
- Dhanishta — late Capricorn into early Aquarius (Mars)
- Purva Bhadrapada — late Aquarius into early Pisces (Jupiter)
The lords of those nine are only three grahas: Sun, Mars, Jupiter. That is a teaching pattern, not a mystery. The remaining mansions, wholly inside one sign, are ruled by the other four plus the nodes.
What actually changes at the line
A planet in the Aries portion of Krittika has Mars as sign lord and the Sun as nakshatra lord. A few degrees later, in Taurus, Venus owns the sign and the Sun still owns the mansion. Dignity can flip with that step. In whole-sign counting, Aries and Taurus are consecutive houses, so the sign change is also a house change. The mansion continues. The house number does not.
That last distinction is the one popular lists skip. “Moon in Krittika” can describe a first-house Moon or a second-house Moon, a strained lunar dignity or a Venus-hosted one, depending on which side of 0° Taurus the degree falls. The mansion name stays. The rest of the document moves.
Dasha does not split with the sign
Vimshottari is keyed to the Moon’s nakshatra, not to the Moon’s rashi. A Moon that crosses from Aries Krittika into Taurus Krittika does not change mahadasha lord. The Sun remains the period-planet associated with that mansion. What can change is everything counted from the sign: functional lordship of the Moon, house occupied, some yogas that require a particular rashi. Timing seed and sign-based structure part company at the line. Vimshottari Dasha: How the Sequence Is Built is the clock. This page is why the clock and the sign-table can disagree for a few degrees.
Pada, navamsa, and the edge
Each spanning mansion still has four padas of 3°20′. Some padas sit entirely in the first sign, some entirely in the second, and — depending on the exact start degree — one pada may itself sit close to the rashi line. Pada: The Four Quarters of a Nakshatra is the measuring note. Near 0° of a sign, ayanamsa choice can move a planet from one rashi into the other while leaving the nakshatra name intact, or the reverse if the planet is near a mansion boundary instead. Name the ayanamsa when the degree is close. The spanning mansions are where that honesty is most often needed.
How to read the split without inventing a personality
Write both hosts. Write which side of the line. Then look for agreement elsewhere: does the sign lord already repeat as a house lord or dasha planet? Does the nakshatra lord already own something loud in the chart? A mixed signal that repeats is information. A mixed signal that exists only because a website printed “Krittika people are…” is a caption.
If you are working without a firm birth time, the Moon’s spanning mansion is often still usable from the date. The lagna’s spanning mansion usually is not. A rising in late Aries versus early Taurus is a different first house. The mansion name will not rescue the hour. When the Ascendant Sits on a Sign Boundary is the companion problem, one step coarser than this one.
Keep the spanning mansion as a technical split: two rashis, one nakshatra, two kinds of lordship. Read the split. Leave the folklore that tries to make nine captions out of nine names.
