Pada: The Four Quarters of a Nakshatra
Each mansion splits into four spans of 3°20′. Those quarters are why navamsa, dasha remainder, and two people with the same nakshatra can still differ.

Thirteen degrees twenty minutes divide cleanly into four. Each pada is 3°20′ — the same span as one navamsa. That is not a coincidence of teaching folklore. The nakshatra pada and the ninth harmonic share a measuring stick. A planet’s pada is, among other things, a pointer into D9.
This is why two charts with the Moon in the same nakshatra are not interchangeable. One may be in the first pada, another in the fourth. The mansion name matches. The navamsa sign, the remaining dasha balance, and some traditional results tables do not.
The four padas as a measuring fact
Pada 1 occupies the first 3°20′ of the mansion; pada 4 the last. In the usual mapping, successive padas of a nakshatra fall in successive navamsa signs, cycling through a fire, earth, air, water pattern depending on the mansion’s start. You do not need the full mapping table to use the idea: the quarter is specific, and it is degree-dependent.
Because it is degree-dependent, it is birth-time dependent for the lagna and for fast-moving points. The Moon’s pada is often still usable when the hour is only approximate, because the Moon’s daily motion is about 13° and a rounded time may still keep it inside a 3°20′ box — or it may not. Check. Do not assume.
A worked remainder: suppose the Moon has travelled 10° into a 13°20′ mansion whose lord is Saturn (19 years). The fraction remaining is 3°20′ / 13°20′ = 1/4, so about 4.75 years of Saturn are left at birth. Pada language would say the Moon is in the third pada (9°20′–12°40′) or already entering the fourth, depending on the exact minute. The remainder calculation is continuous; the pada is the bin. Use the bin to see where you are. Use the continuous fraction to start the clock.
Why dasha remainder cares
Vimshottari’s opening mahadasha is the lord of the janma nakshatra. How much of that mahadasha remains at birth depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the mansion. A Moon at the beginning of a nakshatra leaves almost the full planetary term; a Moon at the end leaves a stub. Pada is a convenient way of seeing which part of the mansion you are in, though the exact remainder is a continuous calculation, not a four-step staircase. Treat pada as a useful bin, not as the formula itself.
Pada and navamsa
Because 3°20′ is one navamsa, a change of pada is a change of D9 sign for that planet. Traditional dignity work in navamsa — a planet vargottama (same sign in D1 and D9), or a planet that improves or struggles in D9 — often begins here. Fine D9 claims still need a birth time that can support the lagna of the harmonic chart. Planetary padas from the Moon and slower grahas are more robust than lagna-pada claims from an unverified hour.
How far to push it
Some popular lists assign a ‘purpose’ or a caste-like label to each pada. Those lists travel well on the internet. They are a thin use of a technical division. CapSage will keep the measuring fact and leave the caste folklore. If a pada agrees with a navamsa dignity and a dasha remainder, it has already done real work.
If the degree sits on a pada edge, say so. A 3°20′ box is small. Honesty about the edge is part of reading the box.
