Does Chanting Require Belief?

Belief helps some people. Courtesy helps everyone. Atheists have counted breaths for a long time.

If the phrase is a prayer, belief is not a side dish. If the phrase is a rhythm for attention, you can use it as a tool while remaining unconverted. The honest move is to know which you are doing. Using a deity's Name as a brain toy, while possible, is a guest's choice with a guest's duties.

You can refuse metaphysics and still repeat a sound. You can believe and still be using the sound as self-soothing. Mixed motives are human. Pretending they are pure is theatre.

Belief is not a ticket. Attention is not a creed. Do not steal either from the other.

This house will not demand faith. It will demand that you do not strip a living prayer for parts and then call the leftovers 'universal'.
