Why we chant · 6 of 6

Traditions distinguish vaikhari (spoken), upamsu (whispered), and manasika (mental) japa, with arguments about which is 'higher'. Higher is a ladder we do not need. Spoken sound holds a scattered mind. Mental repetition can go deeper or become a blur. Whisper is a compromise with rooms and pride.
Use the volume that keeps you honest. If silent chant is just thinking about lunch, speak. If spoken chant is a performance for the next room, go inward. The criterion is return, not rank.
Volume is a tool. Rank is a hobby.

Can You Chant While Walking?
Yes. Some of the oldest practices assumed feet. Stillness is a luxury, not a law.
