The words get used as synonyms in wellness copy. In Sanskrit usage, a mantra is a formulated sound with a context — often a lineage, a deity, a purpose. Japa is the practice of reciting, usually counted, often with a mala. You can do japa of a mantra. You can also repeat a name, a verse, a breath-sound.
The nuance
