Transits from the Moon and Transits from the Lagna

Saturn is in Aquarius. For someone with Aquarius rising, that is a first-house transit. For someone with the natal Moon in Capricorn, that is a second-from-Moon transit — the last third of sade sati in the usual count. Same Saturn. Two different house numbers. Two different traditional essays.

Gochara can be counted from more than one starting sign. The two that matter most in ordinary Jyotish are the lagna and the natal Moon. Mixing them is how a headline becomes unintelligible. From the lagna

When a transiting graha occupies the sign that is the natal first, second, tenth, and so on, you are reading gochara from the rising. The topics are the usual house topics: body and arrival, resources, siblings, home, children, conflict, partnership, hidden matters, dharma, vocation, gains, loss. This count requires a lagna. Without a usable birth time, “Saturn in your tenth” is a sentence that cannot be finished. Transits Need a Natal Floor is the prior condition. The floor, for this count, includes the hour.

Whole-sign practice makes the occupation simple: transiting Saturn in the sign of the natal tenth is a tenth-house transit for the whole of Saturn’s stay in that sign. Degree-based house systems move the story when Saturn crosses a cusp. Say which system you are using. Do not slide from a whole-sign occupation to a cusp-timed week without admitting the change of method.

From the Moon

When the same transiting graha is counted from the natal Moon’s sign, the house numbers belong to Chandra lagna. Sade sati is the famous case: Saturn transiting the twelfth, first, and second signs from the natal Moon, a span of about seven and a half years. Saturn Transits and Sade Sati is the long Saturn essay. The counting rule is the point here. Sade sati does not ask what is rising. It asks where the Moon was at birth.

Other Moon-based gochara notes exist: Saturn in the fourth or eighth from the Moon in some lists, Jupiter’s transit through the natal Moon’s sign, the nodes relative to Chandra. Ashtakavarga, in the systems that use it, is often computed from several points including the Moon. CapSage will not smuggle a full ashtakavarga course into this page. We will say: Moon-based counting is a real second circle, with its own traditional weight, especially for mind, body-habit, and public lunar topics.

When the two circles disagree

They disagree often. A Saturn-in-tenth-from-lagna year can be a second-from-Moon year, or a ninth, or a fifth, depending on the angular relationship between rising and Chandra. One circle may be describing vocation while the other is describing the last stretch of sade sati. Both can be written down. One should not be used to silence the other. Agreement is more interesting than either circle alone. Saturn occupying the natal tenth and also sitting in a traditionally heavy place from the Moon is a stacked condition. Stacking still describes a stretch of circumstances. It does not timestamp a dismissal. Why One Transit Cannot Carry an Event remains in force for both counts.

When the hour is weak

Prefer the Moon-based circle. The natal Moon’s sign is usually available from the date. The lagna is not. You can discuss Saturn relative to Chandra — including sade sati — with an honesty label on the birth time. You should not discuss Saturn through the natal tenth as established fact when the tenth itself is a rumour. Ascendant vs Moon Sign is the identity-level distinction; this is the timing-level one.

A complete gochara sentence names the transiting planet, the count being used (from lagna or from Moon), the house or sign, the duration, and whether dasha agrees. “Saturn is in Aquarius” is a sky report. It becomes interpretation only after the starting point is chosen and said out loud.

Jupiter’s cycle makes the split easy to see. A year of Jupiter in the natal ninth from lagna is a dharma-and-grace emphasis for that rising. The same Jupiter, counted from the Moon, may be in the third, the sixth, or the eleventh. One person is being described as in a ninth-house Jupiter year; another, with the same sky, is in a sixth-from-Moon Jupiter year. Both sentences can be true. Publishing only the one that sounds kinder is a selection effect, not a method.

If you publish both counts, keep them labelled. “From lagna: tenth. From Moon: second (sade sati, closing third).” A reader can then see why one source is talking about work and another about a long lunar Saturn. They were never looking at different planets. They were looking at different zeros.
