The Difference Between Music and Chant

Music wants a journey. Chant wants a return. They borrow each other's clothes constantly.

A song develops. A chant insists. Kirtan, hymn, nasheed, shabad sit on the border and that is fine. The distinction is still useful: if the piece needs a chorus, a bridge, a peak, you are in music. If it needs the same door a hundred times, you are in chant.

You can be moved by either. Do not file all sacred sound under 'playlist'. Some of it is a tool. Tools are allowed to be beautiful. They are not required to entertain you.

Entertainment can be holy. It is still entertainment. Chant can be plain. It is still work.
