How House Lordship Changes a Dasha

Two people enter a Saturn mahadasha in the same calendar year. One is running Saturn as lagna lord from the tenth. The other is running Saturn as lord of the twelfth and first from the eighth. The planet’s name is identical. The job is not. If you describe both periods as “Saturn is hardship,” you have described a reputation, not a chart.

House lordship is the mechanism that makes dasha results chart-specific. A dasha planet is always also a house lord (except the nodes, who own no signs in the usual seven-graha ownership scheme, and must be read by occupation, nakshatra, and the lords of the houses they occupy and aspect). For the seven, ownership is often the first sentence that should be spoken once the period is named.

Natural nature and functional role

Saturn is a natural malefic. Jupiter is a natural benefic. Those labels are climates of style — delay versus expansion — and Benefics and Malefics already refused to moralise them. Functional role is the local job: for Taurus lagna, Saturn rules the ninth and tenth and is often treated as a yoga-karaka; for Cancer lagna, Saturn rules the seventh and eighth. A Saturn mahadasha for Taurus lagna and a Saturn mahadasha for Cancer lagna share a planet and almost nothing else in the job description.

Occupation still speaks

Lordship is not the only sentence. Where the planet sits, whom it aspects, and its dignity will modify the job. A yoga-karaka Saturn debilitated in the twelfth will not deliver the brochure tenth house. A functionally difficult Saturn occupying the ninth with support may still produce serious dharma-work. Nodes in period

Rahu and Ketu do not own rashis. In their mahadashas, occupation, the sign lord of their occupied sign, the houses they aspect (in the school you are using), and the nakshatra they occupy do more of the work. Borrowing a sign-lord job for a node because it would be convenient is not a method. Rahu Mahadasha shows one way to keep the node in its own grammar.

A practical habit

When a period starts, write: this planet owns houses X and Y; it sits in house Z; it aspects… Then interpret. If you cannot fill in X and Y because the birth time cannot support the lagna, you should not be narrating house-specific dasha results. Sign-level and lunar-level comments may still be possible. House-level stories should wait.
