When Fewer Remedies Are Better
A pile of mantras, stones, fasts and donations often tracks fear more than method. Restraint is sometimes the more traditional response.

A person in a hard year is handed a list: wear this, chant that, give on Saturday, fast on Thursday, change the name, move the furniture, stop eating a vegetable associated with a graha. Each item may have a household tradition behind it. The list as a list is often a panic response. The astrologer is trying to help. The client is trying to buy a feeling of doing something. The pile grows because nothing in the pile is allowed to be enough.
What Jyotish Remedies Are For described upaya as participation, not reversal. This page is the practical consequence: if a remedy is not a vending machine, multiplying machines will not improve the odds. It will only improve the shop’s week.
When doing nothing is the better call
When the birth time cannot support the diagnosis. When the “affliction” is a single transit given event-weight it cannot carry. When the person is already in medical or psychiatric care and the remedy is being offered as a substitute. When money for rent would be diverted into a stone. When the person has no living relationship with the mantra’s language and is being asked to perform someone else’s religion as a planetary hack. In those cases, adding a practice is not careful Jyotish. It is noise.
One practice, kept
If someone already inhabits a tradition — a Name, a form of giving, a weekly fast they understand — keeping that one thing through a difficult dasha is often saner than importing four new ones. The existing practice has a body. The imported list has a printout. CapSage would rather a reader keep a real bead than collect ten symbolic ones.
Anxiety dressed as completeness
Completeness is a scholarly virtue in a library. It is a vice in a remedy list. You cannot cover every planetary angle. Trying to is how upaya becomes a second job. If you are an astrologer, consider whether the pile is covering your fear of not having helped. If you are a reader, consider whether the pile is covering a decision you already know you have to make.
A difficult period can be walked with ordinary human tools: sleep, work that is possible, people who can stand you, professional help where the problem is professional. A traditional practice can sit beside those tools. It should not replace them, and it should not multiply until the week is unliveable. Fewer, kept, understood — or none, honestly — is a response. A catalogue of ten is often a symptom.

What Jyotish Remedies Are For
Upaya is traditionally a response — mantra, gift, ritual, restraint — offered inside a living practice. It is not a purchase that reverses a planet.
