What Does a Planet Actually “Want”?

“Saturn wants discipline. Rahu wants more.” Useful shorthand. Dangerous if you forget it is a metaphor.

Saturn wants discipline. Rahu wants more. Jupiter wants expansion. The Moon wants safety. We talk like this because it is fast, and because a weather is easier to remember if it has a motive. It is interpretive shorthand. It is not a board meeting in the sky. Planets do not want. They are lights, nodes, cycles. The wanting is ours, projected onto a useful map.

A useful lie, until it isn’t

The danger is obvious once you say it: a metaphor hardens into a character, and the character starts giving orders. “Saturn wants you to suffer” is folklore with a job. “Rahu wants you to leave the country” is a visa with a glyph. Anthropomorphism is a teaching tool. As ontology it is a mess. Traditional Jyotish already has karakas, significations, dignity — a technical vocabulary that does not require a personality. The personality arrives because humans prefer a someone to a climate. Prefer it if you must. Then remember you put the someone there.

Shorthand earns its keep when it helps a beginner remember that Saturn is time and structure, or that Rahu is appetite without a ceiling. It starts to bully a week when the planet is treated as a manager with a performance review. A karaka is a significator. A significator is a weather-maker. Weather does not want. Weather happens, and a person decides how to walk. CapSage will keep the nicknames when they teach. We will drop them when they start issuing orders.

A planet is a weather-maker, not a manager. When you hear it “want” something, check whose mouth is moving.

Use the shorthand if it helps you remember. Drop it when it starts to bully a week. Benefics and malefics as weathers, not villains, is the companion essay. If the sky has become a boss, the dependence solution is next. The graha hubs keep the lights as lights. You remain the one who wants. That is the only wanting the house will take seriously.
