Dasha Sandhi: Reading the Edge of a Period

Sandhi means junction. In dasha work it names the zone where one mahadasha is ending and the next is beginning. Traditional practice often treats a span at the end of one period and the start of the next as mixed: the old host is leaving, the new host is not yet established, and antardashas near the edge can feel like they belong to both stories. That is a technical observation about overlapping emphasis. It is not a folklore of guaranteed collapse.

Fear-mongering around sandhi usually takes a real junction and attaches a disaster. People do sometimes change jobs, relationships, or health status near a period change. People also do those things in the middle of a mahadasha. Middles contain more months, so they contain more events. Edges are more noticeable because the label changes.

What is actually mixed

Near the end of a mahadasha, the remaining antardashas are the last guests of the old host. Near the beginning, the first antardashas — especially the new lord’s own sub-period — introduce the new host. If the two mahadasha lords are natal enemies, or rule very different houses, the handoff can feel like a change of government. If they are friends and occupy related houses, the handoff can feel like a sequel. The natal relationship is the content. The junction is only the seam.

How wide is the zone

Schools differ on how many months to treat as sandhi. Some look at a fraction of the mahadasha; some at a fixed window. CapSage will not invent a universal number. We will say: the closer you are to the calculated change, the more you should be willing to hear both lords. Do not stretch “sandhi” until it covers three years of a nineteen-year Saturn term in order to explain everything.

What not to do with the idea

Do not tell someone they will have an accident because a dasha is changing. Do not delay medical care, legal help, or ordinary decisions until a “better” period starts. Do not use sandhi as a second Sade Sati. If you want to be careful at an edge, be descriptive: two planetary jobs may be audible at once; results may not yet look like the new brochure; the old theme may not have finished speaking. That is enough. Panic is extra, and it is not in the arithmetic.
