Can Astrology Predict Catastrophes — or Just Explain Them Afterwards?

Eclipses, mundane work, retrospective matching. The tradition is older than the slideshow. Intellectual honesty is still required.

Cream papers and lamplight on an archive desk

After a disaster, the charts come out. An eclipse on a capital, a malefic on a national lagna, a node on a famous birth Sun. The match can be striking. Striking is not the same as a prediction that was made, timed, and risked before the event. Retrospective matching is a powerful teacher and a dishonest salesperson.

Mundane astrology — nations, cities, ingresses, eclipses as public weather — is a real branch of the tradition, not a modern hobby. Eclipses were watched because they were visible interruptions of the lights. Classical and later authors wrote on wars, droughts, the fortunes of kings. CapSage will not sneer at that library. We will also not pretend that a library is a warning system with a published accuracy rate.

What honesty requires

Selection bias does most of the viral work. Hits are screenshotted. Misses are not a genre. A year’s worth of eclipses will always land near somebody’s wound; the Earth is crowded. Prediction standards, if we are going to use the word at all, would mean: a claim made in advance, a window, a location or a class of event, and a willingness to count the times the sky was loud and the week was ordinary. Very little popular catastrophe-astrology meets that bar. Some careful mundane work tries. Trying is not the same as having finished the argument.

Explaining a ruin after it has happened is a kind of literacy. Predicting it is a different job, and it owes the living a higher standard than a rhyme.

Do not dismiss the tradition. Do not baptise hindsight as prophecy. If an eclipse is approaching, read the eclipse essay in this archive as weather, not as a verdict on a city. If a chart is being used to “show why” a tragedy occurred, ask whether the same method would have spoken before the news. Intellectual honesty will not make Jyotish smaller. It will make it fit to sit with.

Also in the house

Readers exploring this theme may also find these interesting. Similar weather across traditions is not proof that one system explains another.
